Day 32: Hatch Gutter Construction

Once again, woke to a beautiful but frozen morning.  The cold snap is forecasted to worsen so it will be interesting to see if we can get the shop warm enough for the "fast" epoxy to cure.  It was cold in there today despite cranking the thermostat to high.

My Dad came to the shop today and we had a productive day.  We rain-checked the 1 month dory build celebratory beer for another day as we eeked out every minute of the day.

Tom walked through the shop doors with this beautiful piece of mahogany.  10.5 degrees.  This piece will fit between the front passenger seat and the gutter for the front cross hatch.

Tom also brought in this block for drilling the bow-eye.

Our project today was glueing the gutters for the hatches.  They all fit perfectly.  I just couldn't believe how great they went together.  How my Dad did this seems incredible to me.

I glued while my Dad fastened.

In this shot is the starboard side hatch gutter.  The micro-blocks are pinned to the table to hold the ply pieces together.  We also used wood clamps and some pinch dogs and some other clamps which I don't know their name but will show up later.

It was a long but fun day.  We'll have to wait a while in the cold weather before the epoxy cures.  ??How long a whiles is... the waiting game begins?

Next step... Fitting & glueing the hatch gutters into the hatch.
