Day 1: Scarf Joints

The hull build has begun! We accomplished more than we thought today.  The 3 of us, Lonnie, Tom and I unburied the dory mold.  (We placed the battons on top to keep them safe)

We prepped the shop by cranking up the heat and putting down drip pads on the floor.  Also built a 20 foot table and covered it with plastic.

Tom cut the transom into shape. We used 1/2" ply.

Lonnie rebuilt the epoxy dispenser with a kit from Michael Engineering.

We glassed one side of the thwarts and transom.

Tom shaped the scarfs for the 1/2" ply bottom.

Lonnie showed us how to mix the epoxy based glue and properly apply it for the scarf joint.  We used about a 50/50 mix of wood powder and cotton fiber.

Tom and Lonnie completed the scarf joint by clamping the two pieces to our newly built table.  We also used wood screws and just filled the joint with them.  Nothing will move tonight!

Luckily we are coming off of a cold snap and outside temps are beginning to warm.  We set the thermostat tonight at 50.

Really awesome!! What a wonderful sense of accomplishment when you three have completed the dory. I can't wait for the next installment in the story.

It is not really an anonymous comment, but I can't figure out how that identity button works.

  2. Thanks Steve!
Yeah, This blog is a little quirky. I cannot figure out how to organize the photos. The identify button is way over my head... though, it may just be too much epoxy to the brain.
